Overview

Chennai is India's fourth largest city and the capital of Tamil Nadu state. It is one of India's major port and the commercial hub of South India. The green airy city beckons those who love the leisurely tempo of life. It is a city of courtesy, charm and culture. Temples and Forts, Churches and Beaches, Mosques, Parks and Monuments are all a part of this wonderful city.

Chennai Formerly known as Madras was considered to be very moderate and conservative but that is really changing nowadays. The official language in the city is Tamil - one of the oldest languages in the world.

Chennai is relatively safe compared to other parts of India. it is also called the Detroit of India due to the number of car manufacturers in and in the vicinity of the city. If you are visiting Chennai(Madras) for the first time, you could check with the Tamil Nadu Tourism department for more information. If you do not know Tamil, it is advisable to speak English rather than Hindi, as there is a huge English-speaking population in Madras. All boards and public-utility signs of significance in Chennai are in English.

Population: Over 7.45 Million people (approx).
Climate: 18° C to 43° C.
Monsoon: October to December.
Language: Tamil is the main language. Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi are some of the other widely spoken Indian languages. English is also used for business purposes.

Geographical Location

Chennai is situated in the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. At that time, the weaving of cotton fabrics was a local industry, and the English invited the weavers and native merchants to settle near the fort. By 1652 the factory of Fort St. George was recognized as a presidency (an administrative unit governed by a president), and between 1668 and 1749 the company expanded its control. At about 1801, by which time the last of the local rulers had been shorn of his powers, the English had become masters of southern India, and Madras had become their administrative and commercial capital.
